A couple of days ago, I asked you – our dear readers – what you’d most us to try once we received our Oculus Rift DK2s (mine arrived yesterday). Elite:Dangerous has been consistently among the highest requested games you guys would like to see played using that glorious OLED panel and positional tracking.

Your wish is our command! After some tinkering, and a little help from an anonymous source, I managed to get Elite: Dangerous running with full positional tracking – and let me tell you, it’s a sight to behold. Leaving aside some artefacts, it’s an incredible experience.

For a more detailed look at my thoughts after my first day with the Oculus Rift DK2, check my article here.

His obsession with graphical fidelity over the years has had him branded a ‘graphics whore’ (which he views as the highest compliment) more than once and he holds a particular candle for the dream of the ultimate immersive gaming experience. Having followed and been disappointed by the original VR explosion of the 90s, he then founded RiftVR.com to follow the new and exciting prospect of the rebirth of VR in products like the Oculus Rift. Awesome, thanks very much for the review!
With ED, VR truly is a first class citizen.
After the initial splash screen there isn’t anything that isn’t rendered in gloriously tracked stereo 3D, including the loading screens.
Leaning into menus is something I hadn’t thought of.
I SO wish I could do something like that with my DK1… right now I’m docking, taking off the HMD, reconfigure the gfx to monitor, do my trading and switch it all back again before launching.
Hopefully the lean-in will also be available for other controls than the DK2.

Thanks for confirming what many have suspected – that E:D is even more awesome with the added benefits of the new hardware. This is at the top of my list of titles to try once DK2 arrives. Tell us more! :)

When playing the game with positional tracking, did you find yourself forced to sit up straight and proper, to avoid looking at the back of your avatar’s neck? I like to recline a bit in my chair, but that will be at odds with what most cockpit vr games have you doing.

I only just now had a chance to watch the video and that pretty much answered my question.

However I am still curious if you’ve worn the new Rift for longer than a few minutes at a time. I know comfort isn’t a huge priority until CV1, but does it feel any better by chance?

With DK1 if I stay in it for 30 minutes or more I end up with a raccoon-like mask in my skin from where the circulation has been impeded. I have a big head and I’m hoping the new Rift has slightly longer straps so it isn’t so tight.

Thanks for the video. I just got Elite a couple days ago as well for just this purpose.

Comfort levels are at least as good as the original DK1, but the solution used to clamp the Rift to your face obviously hasn’t changed.

Overall, it’s very comfortable indeed, but until I’ve had a chance to get some extended playtime in the DK2, I’d rather reserve overall judgement until then.

I’ve just received my DK2 today. But I can’t get Elite Dangerous to work with the DK2. How did you manage to set it up? Any help would be much appreciated.
