Google Glass Developer Update: Devs Invited to ‘Glass Foundry’ Event

Google has sent out invites to a developer-focused event for Google Glass, the company's upcoming wearable head mounted display. They're calling it 'Glass Foundry' and it will be a two day 'hackathon' held in two locations: San Francisco and New York City. The invite is supposedly going out to those who pre-ordered the $1500 Google Glass 'Explorer Edition' at last year's Google I/O conference. High profile developers are likely on the invite list as well. At the event developers will have access … Read the full article …

Book of Spells Review; Harry Potter Augmented Reality Game on PS3

Last month Sony launched Book of Spells, a Harry Potter augmented reality game that takes advantage of the PlayStation Move and new 'Wonderbook' peripheral. The game, which is intended for children, uses the Wonderbook as a tracking marker for the PlayStation Eye camera. The PlayStation Move is used as a wand. Together the peripherals appear to create a quite compelling augmented reality game world. But is it any fun? … Read the full article …

Free AR App Idea: Keyboard Trainer

If you've been following along for a bit here at Road to VR, you know I've got a chip on my shoulder when it comes to AR. So far we've seen few  useful implementations of augmented reality. The technology exists to convincingly overlay virtual imagery onto our real world, but so far there's no 'killer app' or usage scenario that is driving adoption of AR. So here's a free idea for an augmented reality app: the keyboard trainer. First come, first served! … Read the full article …

And yet it is a magician that can show you the future of augmented reality, today. … Read the full article …

This is What it Looks Like Through Vuzix’s New Augmented Reality Glasses

While Google's Project Glass may have nabbed much of the AR spotlight lately, Vuzix is hard at work on some very interesting augmented reality glasses which could hit the market long before Project Glass. Using side-mounted optical engines and waveguide optics, Vuzix's upcoming augmented reality glasses create an image that looks like something straight out of a sci-fi film. … Read the full article …

Augmented Reality Welding Mask Provides 100 Million to 1 Contrast Ratio in 3D for Precision Welding [video]

What you see above is not an alien visitor but rather a normal human wearing a prototype augmented reality welding mask. This system, dubbed 'MannVis welding helmet' by its creators, allows welders to see their work with an incredible level of detail that far surpasses what the human eye is capable of. It's great to finally see a practical application of augmented reality when there are so many useless and novel augmented reality demos out there. The augmented reality welding system is not only … Read the full article …

Valve Denies Working on Its Own Head Mounted Display for Virtual Reality Games Despite Internal Research

It's no secret that Valve is internally researching virtual reality. Michael Abrash is publicly known to be Valve's virtual reality and augmented reality researcher. Valve recently put out a job posting for an industrial designer noting that the company is frustrated with the stagnation of gaming interactivity. "Even basic input, the keyboard and mouse, haven’t really changed in any meaningful way over the years. There’s a real void in the marketplace, and opportunities to create compelling user … Read the full article …

Is This The Destiny of AR? 2 Visions of an Augmented Reality Future [videos]

I'd like to present two excellent AR concept videos which give a little glimpse into our world, not too far into the future, where AR is an integral part of life. Wearable computing and augmented reality are almost inevitable, but exactly how they'll be utilized -- for better or worse -- is anyone's guess. These two videos not only show realistic possibilities of advanced AR technology but also present smart commentary on the ramifications of such connected technology. … Read the full article …

The VR community seems to be holding its collective breath to see what impact the Oculus Rift head mounted display will have on the future of virtual reality gaming. Must See: MIT Creates Impressive Augmented Reality Object Manipulation System [video]

I wrote a few months back that augmented reality needed to prove itself. While I still think this is the case, I'm happy to report that top minds are working on just that. Some genius folks from MIT have created 'T(ether)', an amazing system which allows a user to interact with an augmented reality world by reaching out and manipulating it with their hands. … Read the full article …

Augmented Reality Sandbox is One of the Coolest Uses of AR I’ve Seen Thus Far [video]

Just a few weeks ago I wrote that augmented reality (AR) had yet to prove itself. It's a neat idea, and we've seen so many concepts that look great in theory but have yet to be realized, or the all too familiar app which gives you a HUD when you hold your phone up that shows you where different points of interest are around you -- these always turn out to be ultimately useless and nothing more than gimmicks. But, that doesn't mean that AR isn't promising. In fact, I just saw perhaps one of the … Read the full article …
