Tonight at QuakeCon a panel of VR experts will take the stage to talk about the future of VR and the Oculus Rift. Speaking of which, the Oculus Rift Kickstarter has passed $1 million in less than 36 hours and is now 440% funded!

At 7PM EST at QuakeCon tonight a presentation called “Virtual Insanity” will be hosted by big names in the VR space. If you’ve been following along lately, they’ll be familiar to you: Michael Abrash of Valve, John Carmack and Todd Holldenshead of id, and Palmer Luckey of Oculus. They are expected to talk about the future of VR and I’m hoping we’ll hear more details about the Oculus Rift. You can catch a live stream of the presentation right here.

Oculus also has a booth at QuakeCon in the exhibition hall where people can demo the Oculus Rift prototype.

As declared by the official Oculus twitter account, the Oculus Rift Kickstarter passed $1 million in funding in less than two days. Check the widget on the sidebar to the right for the current funding status. 3252 Oculus Rift units have been pledged for and the $5,000 tier has been doubled to 10 slots (currently only 2 slots remain).

The Kickstarter has been updated with an FAQ, which you can find at the bottom of the page, addressing some common questions. One of the biggest is whether or not people with glasses will be able to use the Rift:

This really depends on the shape and size of the glasses. The developer kit is designed to sit as close to your eyes as possible which makes it a bit unfriendly for glasses.  That said, we’ll do everything we can to make it as comfortable as possible for the developer kit and we have a lot of great ideas for supporting glasses in the consumer version (especially since huge portion of the Oculus team wears glasses everyday!).

Palmer himself wears glasses!

The FAQ also makes it clear that the developer version only supports PCs, but integration with consoles is definitely something they are working on.

Is the Virtual Insanity video from Quakecon available somewhere?

  • I can’t find it. The quakecon youtube channel doesn’t have it. Can’t find any articles mentioning that talk. Maybe a summary could be posted?

    Thanks.

  • Can’t find it anywhere either! They have the Carmack talk and the next major one after that, they skipped this :(
