The VR frontier is an exciting place to be right now and it’s indie developers who are leading the way in exploring what makes for great virtual reality gaming. B-12 and Super Mega Mega are two exciting in-development indie Oculus Rift titles doing just that.

Super Mega Mega

Super Mega Mega is a unique sidescrolling platformer for the Oculus Rift. The game’s setup is very interesting—rather than your typical first-person setup, the player in Super Mega Mega controlls a character moving around a in cylindrical environment. We covered the game a few months back and now the developer, Blunt Instrument, has recently updated it to version 0.18 with new levels, features, and bug fixes. There’s still much polish to be done on Supera Mega Mega, but I’m very much hoping that we see it through to a full release!

B-12

B-12 is a platform shooter for the Oculus Rift inspired by the famous Mega Man franchise (one of my favorites!). B-12 is set apart from many Oculus Rift demos in that its creator, Phillip Foshee, says “as much as possible” he is creating all of the programming, art, animation, sound, and music by himself, rather than using pre-made assets from the Unity Asset Store. Foshee is a self-taught developer who started learning Unity and Blender in November 2012 specifically to start making VR games for the Oculus Rift.

He recently released the first alpha-footage of B-12:

Foshee notes on his development blog, “Can’t decide if I want to add any more interactive/puzzle-solving elements or keep the game limited to platforming, exploration and combat. Opinions are very welcome!”

The game looks promising, even in its alpha state. For now there is no publically playable version, but Foshee is aiming for a 2014 release date for B-12.
