Rift Coaster Meets TRON in ‘Grid Coaster’, Demo Available Now

Grid Coaster is an Oculus Rift enabled roller coaster experience built on Unreal Engine 4 which wants to recall the aesthetics of 80’s sci-fi Disney classic TRON (1981).

The legendary Rift Coaster was a rough ‘n’ ready Unreal 3 tech demo has probably introduced more people to virtual reality via virtual reality than any other – at least if viral reaction videos are anything to go by.

The demo, available now on Oculus Share, is developed by Czech Republic based code house Infinite Production on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 using Teddy0K’s UE4 RollerCoaster plugin.

In truth, the ‘futuristic’ neon ‘TRON’ styling is little more than a rendering effect slapped on to ‘another’ roller coaster demo, but the result is surprisingly effective and evocative. It certainly gets the imagination firing for what we could expect should Disney ever takes the obvious step of developing TRON in virtual reality (pretty please!).

Grid Coaster is available for download now from WEARVR and you can find out more about Infinite Production at their website here.
