ILM and Lucasfilm today revealed gameplay of their upcoming Quest 3 game, Star Wars: Beyond Victory – A Mixed Reality Playset, which offers up both virtual and mixed reality gameplay.

In partnership with Meta, the studios served up a first hands-on with the game to attendees at ‘Star Wars Celebration 2025’, taking place April 18-20 in Tokyo, Japan. Along with it comes a good slate of gameplay revealed its first teaser.

Still in development, the studios say Star Wars: Beyond Victory takes place around the time of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), further revealing the game will feature three distinct modes when it launches on Quest 3 and 3S.

This includes a VR/MR combination story mode following podracer ‘Volo’, an arcade mode that brings mini-podracing to a mixed reality holotable, and a ‘playset’ that lets you decorate physical environment in mixed reality with a collection of unlockable virtual action figures and vehicles.

“We’re calling this a Playset because it isn’t just a game; it’s an entirely new way to experience the Star Wars galaxy and the worlds we create at ILM,” said the game’s Executive Producer Alyssa Finley. “This new mixed reality experience blends the physical and digital worlds in a way that’s unlike anything we’ve done before and we’re so excited to share a special first look with our incredible Star Wars community.”

This just feels as if Meta said "Look, we pay for the game but it has to be MR". Why would I want to play those pod races in my room with a top-down view instead of feeling inside the SW universe?.
And the worst part is within a year they'll probably release a far better version for PSVR2 without MR and real races in first person without even bothering to upgrade graphics for the Meta version when Quest 4 is out, the same as they did with Galaxy's Edge or Vader Immortal, both excellent games by the way.

    • I came to write exactly the same comment. Racing should be done in VR, not in MR! Of course I'm waiting to try the game before judging it, but on paper, this does not look like a good idea

Looks alright. But it's not what I think gamers would have wanted. What would have been better is the old arcade version in VR with VR controls. Or something like the versions that came out on Dreamcast, PS2 and OG Xbox.

Better yet, they could have updated Galaxy Edge and Vader Immortal with better textures for Quest 3. Gamers would have loved that. QGO makes them look better. But ILM could have made them better with current hardware than Quest 2 graphics.

And even better yet, if they really wanted to do mixed reality, they could have taken Vader Immortal's Dojo and put it in mixed reality and allow you to fight those enemies in your room while adding more content. Like being able to train and fight against Vader, Yoda, Obi, The Emperor, Mace, Jin, etc. Not only would they increase sales of the Vader Immortal episodes, they would have pushed mixed reality forward with fun combat. Even adding one on one Light Saber combat or gun battles with grenades against a real opponent, ducking and dodging behind mixed reality objects you place in your room, would have been better for gamers.

This pod racer game might end up being fun. Who knows. But it's sad that gamers can come up with better ideas than these developers.

    What are they?

    • Lookit the thumbnail for the trailer ….

Under 90 second trailer, with 2/3 of the footage being other Star Wars VR games. When people buy this they're going to be very confused.

Outright deceptive trailer, because they know the MR content looks underwhelming.
