NBCUniveral’s Syfy channel have announced its new, futuristic crime drama ‘Halycon’ will include the production of 5 special episodes, designed to be viewed through the Oculus Rift VR headset.

The new series comes from Emmy award-winning studio Secret Location, makers of the Sleepy Hollow VR experience, made to support Fox’s TV series.

The new show, Halycon, is to be set in 2058 where virtual reality is common place, so much so it seems that the world no needs VR cops to investigate crimes happening in the virtual plane.

The majority of the new series, directed by BAFTA nominee Benjamin Arfmann, will air on Syfy’s traditional channels in ‘linear’ format, but 5 episodes will apparently be made for viewing on the Oculus Rift. Quite what that means we’re unsure, as there’s precious little detail in the press release, however we’re assuming this will be a spherical 360 degree outing.

The show only just kicked off filming in Toronto this month however, so we guess it’ll be a little while until we can take a look at the show in any form.

Based in the UK, Paul has been immersed in interactive entertainment for the best part of 27 years and has followed advances in gaming with a passionate fervour. His obsession with graphical fidelity over the years has had him branded a ‘graphics whore’ (which he views as the highest compliment) more than once and he holds a particular candle for the dream of the ultimate immersive gaming experience. Having followed and been disappointed by the original VR explosion of the 90s, he then founded RiftVR.com to follow the new and exciting prospect of the rebirth of VR in products like the Oculus Rift. Paul joined forces with Ben to help build the new Road to VR in preparation for what he sees as VR’s coming of age over the next few years.
