VR Philly Meetup #6 – Riftmax and Surreal Developers on Social VR, June 4th at Drexel

Get ready to enter new worlds and discover how virtual reality will revolutionize the way we communicate. On June 4th, VR Philly will be hosting the next meetup and you’re invited! This time, we will be talking about what may very well be the most compelling use of virtual reality: social events.

People say that VR is going to make people antisocial, but we at VR Philly believe otherwise! Along with giving demos of a variety of different multiplayer VR applications, we also have a few guests.

The first guest, Mike Armstrong, is the developer of Riftmax Theater. He has agreed to answer some questions and show off the new features of Riftmax from the theater in real-time. Riftmax Theater is an avatar-driven multiplayer virtual reality social experience designed from the ground up with the Oculus Rift in mind. With more than six theater types and counting, Riftmax Theater allows for voice chat with others, the sharing of video (2D, 3D, and 4D experiences that can be created and shared using the accompanying editor), and endless possibilities for virtual meet-ups/performances and a full-service stage/playhouse with events scheduled often by the creators and players.

The second guest we have is Orchun Koroglu from Surreal Games. Surreal is an immersive game world where players engage in real-time adventures with their friends. Maybe you’re in the mood to hunt dinosaurs at the edge of the forest, go skiing or skydiving, try your luck in the casino, dance the night away or just kick back in the hot tub and talk about your day. You can do all that, and more. You are a passenger on our ship that is much bigger on the inside than on the outside, and offers exotic excursions in both space and time. And Surreal is an open platform with new content coming online all the time, so we’ll keep you entertained, whether you want to ride with Genghis Khan or dance to Chaka Khan.

Koroglu will be presenting and also showing off what Surreal has been working on. He will use two Oculus Rifts and a Leap Motion setup to demo real time conversation with avatars in the world. There is real time lip sync, hand gestures, head tracking, and voice chat! They can also show real time video content to share with friends. All will be running on their cloud-based Surreal network.

There’s also been an explosion of VR demos from the Oculus Mobile VR Jam 2015, some of which were multiplayer experiences, so we will be showing you these as well, along with other social experiences for the Oculus DK2, Leap Motion, and Razer Hydra such as VR Chat.

VR Philly hosts Eli and Tyler will be giving a presentation on the future of virtual reality as a social platform.

As always, food and beverages will be provided. The event is free of cost and all that we ask is that you have some sort of identification. This is an event you won’t want to miss. We hope you will join us to learn about the next generation of social networking and multiplayer gaming!
