VRTGO 2015 is almost here! A leading UK virtual reality conference, the event is to be held at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts in Gateshead on November 12th and the event’s organisers have just announced the latest sponsor, ARM Holdings will be on hand to demonstrate how their technology is powering the latest mobile VR headsets.

VRTGO kicks off this Thursday with a wealth of guest speakers, exhibitors and industry buyers descenting on the Baltic Contemporary Arts Centre in Gateshead to meet and talk virtual reality. As one of the last VR events before the end of 2015 and the imminent arrival of Valve’s HTC manufactured Vive and Oculus’ Rift consumer VR headsets, it’ll be a great chance to reflect on what might be in store for the industry over the next 12 months.

As this is a UK event, there will of course be a selection of local developer talent attending. CCP Games, whose Newcastle offices are developing EVE:Valkyrie for the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR headsets. Sony will be present too, with their London Studio being instrumental in ground-breaking R&D into virtual reality content.

Another big name in the worldwide tech industry who happens also to hail from the UK is ARM Holdings, a multinational technology house whose CPU’s and GPU’s power vast numbers of mobile devices. ARM will be demonstrating how their latest designs power Samsung’s S6 based consumer virtual reality headset Gear VR at the show.

“We are looking forward to attending VRTGO for the first time where we will be showing the cutting edge capabilities of our Mali graphics technology through demos including our Ice Cave VR demo,” said Nizar Romdhane, director of developer ecosystem, business line group, ARM. “The virtual reality version of the Ice Cave demo for Samsung Gear VR highlights a number of highly optimized rendering effects Mali graphics enables, such as reflection, refraction, soft shadows, procedural skybox, and bloom that allow the user to enjoy an amazing VR experience.”

Event director Carri Cunliffe said, “It is great to have a technology company supporting the VRTGO event and we are excited to try their cutting edge demos and technology for ourselves. Their demo shows the amazing capabilities of mobile VR and gives developers a chance to ask the ARM guys questions on how to improve the performance and visual quality of their VR games and content on ARM technology.  It is also great that some of their partners are also exhibiting including Samsung, Unity and nDreams.”

His obsession with graphical fidelity over the years has had him branded a ‘graphics whore’ (which he views as the highest compliment) more than once and he holds a particular candle for the dream of the ultimate immersive gaming experience. Having followed and been disappointed by the original VR explosion of the 90s, he then founded RiftVR.com to follow the new and exciting prospect of the rebirth of VR in products like the Oculus Rift. Paul joined forces with Ben to help build the new Road to VR in preparation for what he sees as VR’s coming of age over the next few years.
