Preview: ‘Rexodus VR’ is a Powerful Intro into the Would-Be World of Space Dinos

Rexodus VR is a DK2-compatible demo that throws you into the world of Rexodus, the dino-driven graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics. Possibly one of the slickest mini-cinematic experiences we’ve seen as of late, Rexodus VR is a potent reminder of how incredibly good-looking first-person experiences really can be in VR.

Created by Steelehouse Productions, Rexodus VR is only about a 5 minute experience, putting you in the shoes of a silent protagonist that is tasked with helping the crew on their fight through the galaxy. Steelehouse is the legal copyright holder of the text and illustrations of the Rexodus series.

In the demo we meet Amber Dixon, a teenage girl thrown into the world of the dinosaur-run space ship, the Scavenger. Seeing the Disaurian world Terros Secundus from a massive viewing deck, you then teleport to the ship’s bridge to meet the graphic novel’s dinosaur protagonist, Kelvin, who explains to you that your current research on an “alternate fuel source” is really ‘the Black Blood’, an evil substance that originally made the dinosaurs board their magma-driven ships and flee the Earth 65 million years ago.

The demo’s retelling of the Rexodus IP is incredible, and you don’t have to be a fan of the graphic novel to appreciate the sort of engaging world that Steelehouse created. We can’t wait to see more in the same vein – and if they do make an extended episode – that the role of silent protagonist won’t wear thin too quickly.

Steelehouse is recommending a GTX 970 and 8GB of RAM as a minimum spec, and although I got away with using an under-speced AMD R9 280, there were clearly moments when more horsepower was required.

According to the official Rexodus Facebook page, the demo will soon be available for traditional monitors – in the meantime however you can watch a 360 video of the demo on VRIDEO.
