‘Beat Saber’ to Receive Level Editor “soon”, Letting You Build Tracks With Any Song

Beat Saber, the VR rhythm game in Early Access that made its way to the top spot on Steam this past weekend, is getting a level editor soon that will let anyone build and slice away to whatever music they like.

Developing studio Hyperbolic Magnetism released word of the level editor in a tweet yesterday, saying that not only would it be available “soon,” but that there would be more information coming on Friday, May 11th.

Beat Saber currently only features 10 songs, each with four difficulty levels. The addition of the Level Editor would be a boon to repeated playability in the short-term as the game continues Early Access, although it’s uncertain still if the studio will actively promote sharing levels due to copyright issues.

The developers already endorse a community-built song injector, and unofficial 2D and 3D level editors, although these are admittedly less user-friendly than having a native, in-game option available to the casual player.

Some modders have already taken to the community-built tools, building custom levels using commercial music such as Imagine Dragons’ song Believer (seen below).

Sweet. I just hope people don’t only make ridiculously difficult expert levels.

    • DanDei

I think it will be a good mix from easy to ultrahard levels. But the success of the whole thing depends on how easily you can share, search, download and rate levels in quality and difficulty

      • Zachary Scott Dickerson

yes, hopefully it’s just like steam work shop, click one button to subscribe and it will auto install and auto update when they tweak the songs.

        • DanDei

If it weren’t for the music industry and their copyright lawyers I would say that is the way it most likely will be. But sharing beatmaps to their precious songs is probably some kind of copyright infringement in itself. :(

          • johngrimoldy

How i want so badly for you to be wrong, I’m quite sure you’re spot-on.

          • NooYawker

I think many artists made a ton of money from guitar hero, now they’re very protective of their music in games. So you’re probably 100% correct.

  • Michael Slesinski

do people even realize what a pain in the dick it is to make beat maps? i honestly dont think they do or nobody would give a rats ass about this feature.

    • F1ForHelp

You’d be surprised by the amount of time people waste trying to do things as tedious as making beat maps.

Just look at every sandbox game ever. (Gmod, Minecraft, etc)

      • Michael Slesinski

nowhere NEAR as tedious as making beat maps.. its pretty obvious you have never even tried to make one or you would know just how far off you are.

        • F1ForHelp

If I was referring to just playing those games, then you’d be correct.

          • Michael Slesinski

well then, retard… perhaps you should say what you REALLY mean instead of making innuendos and then pretending people dont know what you are talking about.

          • F1ForHelp

            Ok sorry.

I believe gmod is a good example just because of the steam workshop. There are maps, mods, modes, addons, and servers which people spend a ridiculous amount of time on to make.

When I played Minecraft many years ago, I spent way too much time on making contraptions in the game as well.

I think people would expend enough effort to make beat maps. Maybe not now because you can’t share them, but if you could, it’s reasonable to believe that the pretty large amount of people playing the game would be interested.

          • Michael Slesinski

i know nothing about “gmod” because im not a 7 year old simpleton..

minecraft is stupidly easy to mod.

you apparently know not a fucking thing about beat maps. go download osu! and then go download some OFFICIAL beatmaps (because shit beatmaps dont get accepted) and then start using the OSU! beatmap editor and get back to us when you finally get one made official.

          • F1ForHelp

I guess I’m being optimistic then.

How do you make beat maps?
I ask because if is so difficult, then the editor is the problem because the amount of information that’s actually inputted to make beat maps is tiny. If each block has a variable for a timestamp, color, direction, and x and y coordinates, then what exactly is making the process so difficult?

          • Michael Slesinski

i just told you how. your assumptions do NOT equal facts.

          • F1ForHelp

Keyword “if” proposes an imaginary situation.

So if you’re suggesting that the prerequisites I proposed are assumed wrong, then exactly what is being inputted so I can get the next question answered?

          • david vincent

Ignore him, don’t help him, he didn’t even press F1 ;)

          • F1ForHelp

            My day has been made.

Thanks for upholding the status of this website.

          • david vincent

            you’re welcome, nice nick btw

          • Michael Slesinski

GO DOWNLOAD OSU! AND MAKE SOME BEAT MAPS! i shouldnt have to repeat myself to your stupid ass to get my words across. go DO IT (and make sure they get made official) and pretend its something people will enjoy doing. its a pain in the dick and doing it for osu! is FAR easier than doing it for beat saber. simply saying “people will do it” doesnt make that a fucking fact! especially if you have NO CLUE what making a GOOD beat map entails. the dev probably spent 40+ hours on each one for beat saber, and thats being optimistic! its tedious painstaking bullshit that 95% of people are not going to give a fuck about! for example if you do 1 for an EDM song and 90% of the people playing the game dont listen to EDM that means only 10% of the players will even have a CHANCE of seeing your work.

i dont care how many of your fellow fucktards support your right to be an idiot, it isnt acceptable.

          • F1ForHelp

If you only care about the feud, then skip the next paragraph.

I was never making an argument to try to prove if custom beat maps will ever get made. You obsessing over trying to oppose that nonexistent argument wrong is why I’m upset. Other people are upset because you’re using emotional loaded responses as logical debate. Your emotion has evoked others’ emotions and your use of the word ‘fucktard’ isn’t going to convince any of them that you have a point when you’re acknowledging them as a majority. It is making me happily emotional that people actually care to defend me.

            Now to the actual issue:
It doesn’t make sense to say that people won’t be making beat maps because they already have been. There’s a whole bunch of genre diverse maps that have been made WITHOUT native support. Now I am curious about how many more people will start making them when they actually release the update that’s going to allow it natively.

There are currently over 8000 people in a discord server involved with making beat maps. (3000 online on average) I would never make the argument that no one cares when such a thing exists 13 days after the release of the game.

The game itself has become so popular that any difficulty involved with customizable gameplay has become a mute point. That being said, it doesn’t take 40+ hours to make those maps.

It probably took the developer a long time because they wanted to make the game as polished as possible, but note that there are 10 songs that can be played with 3 modes on 4 difficulties. That’s 120 different levels, 30 of them on expert difficulty. If you only made the expert versions with the minimum time of 40 hours, that would be 1,200 hours, which is a little over 1.5 months if the person did it without stopping. That’s the only reason why I’m calling that unrealistic.

          • Michael Slesinski

theres a ton of people thinking the earth is flat too, it doesnt make it a reality. making GOOD beat maps takes time, its that simple. so there CAN be 20000 people in a discord server WANTING to make beat maps, it doesnt mean any of them will be good. meanwhile 75% of them are probably as useful as YOU are and just want somebody to make maps for whatever gay shit they listen to. shall we consider the effects useless wankers making beat maps will have? 400k beatmaps on the workshop to sort through (again i refer you to OSU!) 80% of which are only partially finished or are complete shit. yea THAT will encourage people to use the workshop! nothing says “fuck this game” like finding 14 beat maps of the same song ALL OF WHICH ARE SHIT!

          • ShadowHunter

            Hey. Stop being an asshole.

          • Michael Slesinski

            stop being a fanboy retard..

          • ShadowHunter

What am I being a fanboy of? Internet etiquette?

          • ShadowHunter

All I’m doing is fighting your toxicity with my own so some actual conversation can happen without someone being called a retard every time they’re not on your side.

          • ShadowHunter

You’re ignorant because you’re NOT a 7 year old? Pfff

          • Michael Slesinski

i bet you think people are impressed by you putting the round peg in the round hole too..

          • Sh Mel

Made this bullshit account to say fuck you asshole. F1 gave you a reasonable response, told you you were correct, and you drop a pussy-ass R-bomb. And yeah I saw your other posted R-bombs, too. Go have your mommy reassure you that your tiny wiener is just special, then get on with your punk-ass bullshit life.

          • Cobsad

I’m here to back you up too, fuck you @michaelslesinski:disqus, you’re a little bitch

          • Michael Slesinski

no really, the more of you tards go spastic the better my day gets!

          • ShadowHunter

The fact that your ego is fueled by that is making me seriously question your motive. What are you doing any of this for? What are you trying to prove to everybody if you don’t actually care for anybody? Does stating that you have an ego make it bigger? Does it make you think you’re more right?

Or are you looking to feed your feelings because you’re just a troll. Because the only thing that matters when you use the internet, is how many laughs you get.

          • ShadowHunter

I’m going to be careful, because this is slowly becoming the chemical reaction for a witch hunt.

          • Michael Slesinski

i dont owe you any explanation. how about you self righteous twats dont run around screaming like your hair is on fire every time anything offends your hypersensitive asses?

          • ShadowHunter

You’re definitely right that there’s some self righteousness, but you make it really easy for people to align to those extremes when you consume conflict.

You can make a point without deliberately trying to offend people, but there really isn’t any offense anyway, just your lack of a useful vocabulary.

          • Michael Slesinski

my vocabulary is the LAST problem. i cant help that simpletons like yourself are offended by EVERYTHING, thats just the sissies your parents raised.

          • Cobsad

            You’re pathetic

          • Michael Slesinski

as pathetic as being the kind of pansy that nut-rides a strangers comment JUST to call a stranger on the internet “a little bitch”?

            go fuck your uncle.

          • Cobsad

A pansy? Ha I’m calling you out you sad sack of filth, you’re used to “pansies” brushing it off. I want you to know how pathetic you are.

          • Michael Slesinski

“calling me out”? look pussy-boy, i call em like i see em, you may not like being called a pansy or a retard, but perhaps your retarded pansy ass shouldnt act like a pansy or a retard if you dont like being addressed as such (or stop playing day-z and gta 5 you fucking hipster, nut-sucking, trendite, cunt). i give not 1 fuck what some moron on the internet likes or doesnt like about what i say, im STILL going to call a spade a spade. the only impact you can have on me is making me laugh at your retardation laden comments.

          • Cobsad

You eyesight is just as garbage as your emotional baggage you’ve created from years of obvious physical and psychological abuse in your formative years that you spew all over random people in public forums as a subconscious outcry for help. I hope you get the help you need one day pussy boy because not everyone is tough enough to tackle their inner demons on their own, some such as you need their hand held when it comes to dealing with their interpersonal junk. Talking shit to strangers isn’t going to help your sad self, grow a fucking pair and show some god damn respect to your fellow man.

          • Michael Slesinski

hypocrisy or projection? not my problem either way.

          • Cobsad

Now you’re just deflecting pussy boy, you getting winded little fella?

          • Michael Slesinski

you got nothing to deflect, youre just some pansy kid on the internet who is a weekend keyboard warrior. bet your bitch ass cant wait for summer so you can go to all the gay pride rallies.

          • Cobsad

If by keyboard warrior you mean that I’d love to smash my keyboard over your low brow dense skull, then I’d say that shoe fits.

So apart from your nasty habit of trying to impose your inner suffering and sadness that has you afflicted onto others, you’re also a homophobe? You see kid, I think a lot of your pain probably stems from the fact that you’re more than likely a closeted gay. I know that coming out can be scary, but don’t worry little dude, keep believing in yourself and one day you’ll get there, I promise. XOXO

          • Michael Slesinski

aww, he thinks hes threatening. it would be comical if it wasnt so pathetic.

          • Michael Slesinski

hahaha!~ so what struck the nerve? the fact that you are a retard, or that you play g-mod like its NOT a tired piece of shit drool-bucket 9 year olds play?

      • Cobsad

I don’t think it qualifies as time wasted if said time is enjoyed.

        • F1ForHelp

          Way too true.

    • moogaloo

Surely it is possible to auto analyse most music and do it automatically? Would be a great feature if levels made themselves from songs uploaded.

      • Michael Slesinski

it really isnt for this game. if it was JUST blocks.. sure, but having the directions work properly would be pretty much impossible. you have to consider that alot of songs have variable bpm and machines suck at aesthetics.

  • A_VR_Guest

Fun game. I’m looking forward to future updates. Also reading the comments provided an interesting look into the sociopathic G.I.F.T. player mindset. Someone needs a padded cell…

    • Cobsad

What on earth are you talking about??

  • Cool!

  • Herman Munster

I checked it out…… too involved for the average person to do a respectable job on. Knowing the BPM, getting it aligned properly on the grid.
Some tasks are going to need to be automated in order for people to enjoy making maps of their favorite songs. Average user is just going to want to drop in his favorite songs and start placing blocks. Software is going to need to be able to analyze the music and get the basic json’s written out…. do that and you might have one of the most popular games in VR ever….. Can’t wait to see what other programmers come up with when the copy cats start dropping their versions
