Rec Room (2016), the popular social VR app for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, is coming soon to PlayStation VR. Production studio Against Gravity announced Rec Room‘s PSVR release via the PSVR reddit page, saying that the game is slated to arrive by the end of this year.

Rec Room offers a slew of active social games using the respective systems’ motion controllers. With the specific aim to get you up and out of your seat, the app features co-op ‘Quests’ that take you on battles through classic sci-fi and medieval settings, and has a number of group activities like paintball, disc golf, and 3D charades. Whatever it is, Rec Room always seems to give you a reason to come back, and it’s such an excellent experience (when not chocked full of ankle-biters, but hey, who would’ve thought kids like games too) that we put it on our ‘Top 5 Games for HTC Vive’ list.

Against Gravity maintains that PSVR support will include cross-play with Rift and Vive at launch, and just like the PC VR version, will be entirely free. That includes no ads, in-app purchases, subscriptions, paid rooms, or micro-transactions of any kind.

The studio is currently taking applications for its beta, which they say will be on a closed, PSVR-only server during the testing period. Only players connecting from North and South America can apply, something Against Gravity says has to do with the available PSVR regions Sony is currently allowing them to use prior to launch. The studio says regions could be added in the future however, and will push a separate form if Sony allows it.

There’s no firm date yet for the beta’s starting point, but Against Gravity Community Designer Shawn Whiting says it should kick off in “weeks, not months.”

Crossplay? Excellent!! Hope it allows for crossplatform friends lists

Wait…Rec Room on consoles?? I thought Rec Room didn’t allow kids?

    • Fluke

If they actually enforced their own rules and kicked out underage users, they’d lose half of their user base at least.

Bringing it to PSVR is only going to make it worse. Definitely only private games for me from now on.

Rec room was my favorite game but recently the community has been filled with underage noobs. Sadly I stopped playing because of this and probably won’t go back until they properly enforce the age requirement.
Im a level 30 player and find it hard to play quest games with noobs that don’t play well with adults. I had the whole hunter outfit on and level 3 kids were saying I was gay… WTF?

    • Skippy76

I ended up moving on to Onward instead.

As an adult you shouldn’t care.

      • Skippy76

why should I not care? I don’t want to have to deal with screetchy little voices constantly whining and breathing heavy. Most of the kids whine and scream everytime they die and demand you drop everything just to go revive them.
Often they purposely team kill and giggle like little school girls.
It was the developer’s intention to keep 12 year olds or less out for this exact reason. This is a social app to have fun with like minded people.
I knew it would go downhill once it was available on the oculus and even worse on consoles.

I hope they will add a age selector. So we can decide if play only with adult players. I do not want to be in a room with kids please.

    • PJ

You mean anymore than it already is!?

      But I definitely agree 100%

  • PJ

Wish there was some kind of age verification, I’m all for kids playing, we were all kids playing game once upon a time, and it is a cartoon child friendly game.

But I don’t really want to be a game with them, sure some arnt bad, but it really spoils the game for me hearing high pitched screaming down my ears and the constant immature behaviour.

I would love it under 16’s go into there own servers and adults get to play by themselves

Yeah, when almost all of the avatars in the main lobby are half my height, it’s frustrating. It’s difficult, but not impossible, to get a group of four adults who actually want to play the game as intended.

I’ve had kids in my group who were crack shots, only spoke when offering up useful information, just generally great teammates. They are the exception, not the standard, sadly.

I’d be ok with even 13 year olds and up, you know, the people they specifically say the game is for. At 13, players at least TEND to actually grasp the rule set and play accordingly. They’re sometimes hard on the ears but if they’re competent, then whatever.
