In a Q&A session at Austin’s SXSW event, an Oculus panel including VP of Product Nate Mitchell and Oculus founder Palmer Luckey confirmed that their latest feature prototype, ‘Crescent Bay’ does indeed comprise two display panels.
Today YouTube announced that the video streaming service will now support 360 degree video that can be viewed in the browser or through the Android YouTube app. There’s no VR support yet, but I’ve got a feeling that we can count on it coming soon.
At GDC 2015, game developer and CryEngine creator Crytek was showing an impressive virtual reality experience on the Oculus Rift Crescent Bay prototype. But it would seem that the company has much more up their collective sleeve than a mere demo or Rift support for their engine.
After HTC’s surprise announcement at MWC and the subsequent VR frenzy of GDC, it became apparent some lucky developers had had their hands on early Steam VR hardware for some time. Two of them are Bossa Studios‘ (Surgeon Simulator) and Vertigo Games (Skyworld). The video for their recent EGX Rezzed discussion, as compared by Valve Writer Chet Faliszek, is now online.
VR is returning to this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in a big way, with sessions featuring familiar names from Oculus, and a number of key leadership from game studios and hardware companies currently developing for future VR devices.
After months of hearing about Oculus’ latest prototype VR headset, Crescent Bay, and pining after a session with the bleeding edge device for so long, I finally secured a demo with the Crescent Bay prototype at this year’s GDC. What I wasn’t counting on though, was that 24 hours later I would be thrown straight into the new HTC Vive.

While we left off with a Day 2 recap, this episode actually wraps up the last several days of GDC and actually takes place several days after the event ended. Why? Because our friends at Road To VR took a much needed break, recouped, and now Ben Lang is back to give us the final piece to our podcast puzzle.
I’ve got everything I need to kill time at the airport: Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Gear VR headset, my last bag of American Cheetos before I leave the homeland for who knows how long. I’ve even managed to work up the self confidence to wear the thing while sitting in the International Concourse in front of a pack of Italian teenage girls. Barring any repressed memories that still haunt me to this day (locker room incident: I don’t want to talk about it), I have a few hours until my flight departs, and free demos just aren’t going to cut it.
Virtual and augmented reality is hitting this year’s South By Southwest (SXSW) multimedia festival in Austin in a big way. With more sessions and meetings involving VR than we can count, there’s one event happening during the festival for sure not to miss: ‘AR/VR Austin’, a collaboration of companies in the field offering live demonstrations of their content and hardware.
