Meta-owned Beat Games announced its block-slashing rhythm game Beat Saber (2019) will no longer receive updates on PSVR and PSVR 2 starting today, with multiplayer slated to go offline early next year.

The studio announced in an X post that PS4/PS5 versions of the game will no longer be updated, effective immediately, as Beat Games looks “to the future and plan[s] the next big leap for Beat Saber.” 

Beat Games say players on PSVR and PSVR 2 will continue to be able to play and purchase Beat Saber after today, which includes access to previously purchased content, such as the game’s library of paid DLC music packs.

Music packs released prior to June 18th will all be available, however “no new content will be released on these platforms after that date,” the studio says, noting that cross-buy will remain active between the PS4 and PS5 base game.

This makes PlayStation’s last available Beat Saber DLC Lady Gaga’s ‘Abracadabra’, which was released as a paid ‘Shock Drop’ single on June 5th.

Furthermore, support for multiplayer is being pulled on PS4/PS5 starting January 21st, 2026, the studio says.

Multiplayer was introduced in 2020 on PC VR and Quest versions of the game, with cross-play introduced a year later; cross-play between different ecosystems never made it to the PlayStation version of the game, however.

While it’s clear Quest will continue to benefit from future DLC releases and updates—Meta’s Quest platform alone has accounted for more than 10 million unit sales of Beat Saber—the studio says there will also be “no changes to Steam support; music releases will continue to be shared on Steam.”

While Meta doesn’t always play nice with competing companies, it has supported Beat Saber on PSVR since late 2018, making the decision to pull future updates telling of a decidedly abandoned ecosystem.

Since PSVR 2’s February 2023 release, Sony has largely taken a back seat on releasing system-selling exclusives like it did with original 2016 PSVR. Almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy, developers have consequently deprioritized PSVR 2 support over the years—or skipped it entirely—in favor of releasing on comparatively larger install bases, such as Quest and SteamVR.

What’s more, in the meantime Sony has ‘parted out’ PSVR 2, in a manner of speaking. Now, headset owners can freely play PC VR games with an optional wired adapter—totally antithetical to the closed console model—and soon, use their PSVR 2 Sense Controllers with Apple Vision Pro too.

    While the PSVR2 community is cursing Meta across the internet, you are right in pinning the blame on Sony. This is what happens when the first party doesn't show any interest in the platform themselves. They were ashamed to even mention PSVR2 at all in a recent investor presentation, during which they talked about every other peripherals including earphones and driving wheels.

      Which is why I built a pc. I still use my psvr2 but Sony is more concerned with crap live service woke games. Herman guilt is a tool, getting rid yoshido, was a giant mistake.

    Hm… I don't get this story…
    Sony is not doing much of anything to produce first party games, sure, but I had the impression there are still a fair number of games also coming to PSVR2. I have no clue how many PSVR2 systems are out there, but it is likely to be much more the Apple's AVP.
    Regardless: I could understand developers not bringing out a game for PSVR2. But maintaining it takes an order of magnitude less work, so I am somewhat puzzled by this step. Is the relation between Sony and Meta deteriorating somehow, perhaps as a result of Sony's controller becoming available for AVP?

      I assume it's not a "Meta-Sony relationship" thing but purely a "Meta" thing. They generally started to get away from gaming very actively during the last year (closed Ready at Dawn, Onward support was just ended and it's team was "dismantled" + both Downpour's and BeatGame's founders left their positions earlier too, not to mention that plans for Quest 4 changed and now it will be released – if it will be released in general – only in 2027 while literally ruining the cycle of 3 years between mainstream Quest headsets' releases) while also trying to cut costs as much as possible.

      So I think they just decided to do the smartest thing in this situation – if I understand correctly, there is no mods on PSVR1/2 versions of Beat Saber, so players are limited on standard/DLC songs. And, imo, without mods (=ability to download your favorite music – that, in 99% of cases, will never be added as an official DLC – and literally the only thing that made this game popular in general) it's replayability is very low, so even if BS was on top of the sales charts for PSVR, it's retention was very small, so Meta decided to stop caring about PSVR playerbase anymore (just like Sony did earlier).

      I feel that we've just stepped into a new sad era of VR gaming – we will only get one superhero game once a couple of years (because Meta for some reason thinks that it's the best systemsellers for their devices – maybe Arkham Shadow's sales (or boost to Quest 3/3S sales provided by it's release) was much better to As(s)gard's Wrath 2 sales?)) and one big title (99% it will be As(s)gard's Wrath 3) on new headset's release and one port of older classics from Armature sooner or later – and that's all. All other studios will be eventually closed and it's projects will be thrown into the oblivion (like Onward 2 that Zuck mentioned himself or Lone Echo 3 that was in development).

      But hey, we still will have out best thing to do – we still can continue to patiently wait for Valce to release their rumored Deckard headset and maybe even one new game alongside it! At least there is something stable in this world…

        "They generally started to get away from gaming very actively during the last year" – and that's why they're releasing one first party game this year (with more in the works), funding a few 3rd party games (Civ7, Remnant Protocol and probably Syberia VR) and helping to create and fund about a hundred games through the Oculus Publishing program…

          Yeaaaaaaah, “more in the works” my @$$. Proofs? Oh, wait a second – you won’t have any proofs for it because it’s nothing more than your [poor] assumption! While I operate with facts (if you know what those are of course) – did you really forget about cancellation of literally most anticipated VR adaptation of all freaking time that forced a lot of folks to buy a VR headset at the time (so Quest 2 even reached over 20 millions of users) aka GTA San Andreas VR? Or maybe you want to say that Civilization 7, Syberia or Remnant Protocol (or even all those game together) can somehow “beat” the biggest fish in the gaming industry tank there is? Even if we will add all those “hundreds [worthless indie crap-like] games” one port of an 20 years old game would be much more important for the whole industry.

Sanzaru is also hiring for a new game. You must be very naive if you think they will tell you everything openly before they officially announce the game, did you hear a few months ago that they were making Deadpool? Exactly.

            Yeah, right, I am an “angry boy”. I was writing comments on this site for years (5+? 6 or 7+?) now and I was always happy to have a good discussion. I have no fanBOYism in me – I truly believe there is just no saint multibillion dollar company out there and every company and product shouldn’t be worshipped even if it’s somewhat good (or, at least, better than other products on the market).

            While this bold *&^% that appeared out of nowhere less than a year ago writes the same sarcastic *&^% again and again while also trying to be a smart@ss (and he is not very good at that). Plus he is clearly a Meta fanboy that just can’t let someone on the Internet to say bad things about his daddy Zuck.

            I am not a saint either and can be pretty toxic – especially if someone provocated me – but if you truly believe based on both of our comments histories that he is a better person to have in comments than me… Then I, for a moment, will play ViRGiN here and just say “Fuck you as well!” (yeah, like that, without any censorship).

            P.S. – Oh, and if you really think that the current amount of VR games and it’s quality level (aka 99.9% of it is indie trash usually based on one gameplay mechanics) is enough – then industry really is doomed.

      Purely speculation, but it could be because 'what's next' for Beat Saber (let's say, 'Beat Saber 2') is exclusively built around platform features that PSVR 2 doesn't support: like mixed reality (or, hell, they could even be making the next Beat Saber entirely on Horizon Worlds (which PSVR 2 obviously doesn't support.).

        I've been wondering for a long time why they haven't added MR mode to Beat Saber yet, after all this game is perfect for it (and you can play Virtual Desktop with passthrough)… Maybe they're actually keeping it specifically for Beat Saber 2.

    Honestly? I've been surprised Beat Saber's kept going as a multi-platform title as long as it has. I expected this within months of Metabook buying the devs out.

    i'm truly shocked they were still supporting PSVR1.

    I did play BS my fair share when it launched but MP never ticked with me. Played couple times at best and never touched MP again

    Well, now we know this has to do with Meta releasing the Xbox version of the Quest 3 today and wanting to lessen the competition as they try to breach the console gamer market. Considering how rarely they release new music packs anyway, I guess it's not too big of a deal. I'll still play the songs I have. I still boot Beat Saber up once in a while.
